Interim Management vs. Management Consultant

We are often asked what the difference is between an Interim Manager and a management consultant. At first glance, the difference isn’t immediately obvious. However, upon closer examination, there are regardless a number of important distinctions, which point to the advantages of Interim Managers:

Interim Managers

Management Consultants

Hands-on, with full leadership responsibility resulting from practical experience with corresponding assignments and positions Typically structured, analytical and theoretical in their approach to assignments, whereupon reports and analyses are prepared, written, as a rule, by academics lacking management experience
Reports, as an integral part of the organization, directly to the leadership, and is the most qualified for the job Reports to the management firm that was contracted by the company and which has chosen the most suitable person for the job
An ongoing coaching and transfer of competence takes place There is often no transfer of competence
Rapid and transparent approach to resolve the assignment The completion of the assignment relies upon reports, presentations and goes through the management firm, which can be the delaying link in a rapid, constructive resolution
Has responsibility for the implementation of the strategies leading to an assignment’s resolution, quality assurance and following up on the results The client, as a rule, has the responsibility for implementing the suggested strategies, and for following up on the results and quality
Can undertake the assignment within a few days Requires, as a rule, undertaking an exhaustive resource-planning with the firm before beginning the assignment
An Interim Manager costs ca. 50 - 200, 000 per/month A management consultant will be 50 - 200% more expensive
Success depends on the individual’s abilities and experience A management consultant will have the consultant firm as a back-up

Most of our clients make use of Interim Management when there is an acute need; we like to call it emergency-management. These acute needs arise typically after a resignation, during turnarounds, generation-changeover, as a result of illness or absenteeism during a longer period, or in a crisis-situation. However, one can also employ Interim Management to great advantage as part of a planned strategy in selected areas. Interim Managers are in fact also of use in situations requiring specialized competence, as in the case of growth, for example, restructuring or for carrying out specific development and/or change projects.
